JRP: Radu Mihalca is a photographer who made quite an impression upon me as I viewed his images. Thankfully he has taken a few moments to share with our readers his story. Thank you Radu for taking time to answer a few questions for JRP Blog.
Radu Mihalca: I am glad that you were interested in my work and I am happy to answer to your questions.
JRP: Where is home for you Radu?
Radu Mihalca: I was born in Satu Mare, a city in Romania. I live and work as a photographer here.
JRP: How did you get started in photography and do you have any formal training in your background?
Radu Mihalca: I began to take pictures 4 years ago, that was about the time when I bought my first DSRL. I realized that I can do more so I tried to improvise a studio with my friend Dorin Vancea. There I experienced different lighting. I don’t have any formal training.
JRP: What is it about photography that motivates you?
Radu Mihalca: The fact that my work is appreciated is the force that makes me go on. I say that because I live in a small town and the chances to prove your qualities are fewer than in the big city.
JRP: Equipment wise what would I find in your camera bag for a typical shoot? What lighting equipment do you favor?
Radu Mihalca: I use two cameras, a Canon EOD 50 D and a 30 D. The lens are Canon 50 mm f 1,4 and 24-105 mm f 4 L IS.
Concerning the lighting equipment, I use Hensel plus the accessories, different softboxes plus grid, beauty dish ,spot, etc.
JRP: Could you please describe your digital work flow and the software you use.
Radu Mihalca: Before a shooting I talk to my client about the location. It might be in the studio or in another place we choose it together.
After the shooting I save all the images on an external hard disc. I choose the image I use for the catalog by consulting the client. For RAW images I use Lightroom for the WB correction , contrast and color. Small retouch , especially skin imperfections with Photoshop CS.
JRP: Do you print any of your images?
Radu Mihalca: I usually print my pictures for competitions or exhibitions.
JRP: Could you break down one of your images and explain the lighting and any special concerns you might of had during the shoot?
Radu Mihalca: For this picture I have used 3 lighting sources. For the principal light I use a soft box plus grid, secondary light, a strip, and in the background on the wall there is a blue light for the cold atmosphere. The theme is a bride from a “snow land”.
JRP: What are some of the new directions being taken by you in your photography?
Radu Mihalca: Fashion photography is the direction I took and I want to grow more in this domain.
JRP: What has been some of the best advice given to you by another photographer?
Radu Mihalca: Some of the best advice I was given was that no matter how good you are you still have to learn something or you can not improve. Another bit of advice was to stimulate my creativity to take the best pictures.
JRP: What advice would you like to share with other photographers?
Radu Mihalca: My advice would be to try not to make compromises even if it is not easy.
JRP: Thank you Radu for sharing your thoughts and images with us. It has been a pleasure talking with you. We wish you continued success.
Radu Mihalca: It was a pleasure for me too. Thank you very much.
