JRP: Fashion Photographer Jacques Dequeker has been kind enough to be featured in this Spotlight episode. Thank you Jacques for sharing your time with JRP Blog.
Jacques Dequeker: It’s a pleasure to share it!
JRP: Where do you call home and how did you get your start in photography? Was there any formal training in your background?
Jacques Dequeker: My hometown is Porto Alegre, Brasil, and my first base is in São Paulo. However I’m always traveling around the world to learn about life, people, photography and sharks (my personal work). I worked for 3 years as an assistant. In 2000, I started to shoot alone.
JRP: For every photographer there is a moment where it clicks that this is what they should be doing. When did you realize that fashion photography was the career choice for you?
Jacques Dequeker: Since the beginning my dream was to be a fashion photographer. I never tried to do something that I didn’t like.
JRP: Could you name a couple of photographers that have impacted your work and why?
Jacques Dequeker: Irving Penn and Helmut Newton, for the classic and sexy way of their images.
JRP: Do you work with a support staff and what areas do they handle?
Jacques Dequeker: I have 2 assistants in photography and 2 more when I’m filming.
JRP: What equipment would I find in your camera bag or studio for a typical shoot? What lighting equipment do you favor and why?
Jacques Dequeker: I worked with Hasselblad, Leica. Now I’m using more the Canon 5D, and for film I had 2 Red cameras. I’m doing a lot of 3d photos and the 5D is light and fast for this kind of photography. I also use the 5D in an Ikelite housing for underwater shooting, specially the shark pictures.
JRP: Could you describe your digital work-flow and the software you use?
Jacques Dequeker: I just use Lightroom for color and Photoshop for little retouch.
JRP: Do you personally print your images?
Jacques Dequeker: I have a team to do this.
JRP: With today’s economy tell us how you keep productive and retain your creative edge.
Jacques Dequeker: I believe in the moment. I don’t think so much. I just do it!
JRP: Are there any memorable images or shoots you could share with us? What made that image or shoot special?
Jacques Dequeker: The shot that I did for Vogue Brasil in Chanel’s apartment is one of the best moments. That place is the temple of fashion and just few people had this pleasure. Some of my idols, like Horst and Dali, had a seat in the same coach that I used in my pictures. It was amazing.
JRP: What do you feel is one of the major mistakes new photographers make in pursuing a career in fashion?
Jacques Dequeker: Fast success is always a problem. Having a base is very important.
JRP: What has been some of the best advice given to you by another photographer?
Jacques Dequeker: I’ve heard a lot like “don’t go for fashion photography, you will be poor!”
JRP: What advice would you like to share with other photographers?
Jacques Dequeker: Always do what makes you happy.
JRP: Thank you Jacques for sharing your thoughts and images with us. It has been a real pleasure.
